Type 2 Diabetes – How To Cure

Type 2 diabetes cannot be cured fully, but studies have shown that it can be reversed. It is possible to hold a normal sugar level with medication by healthy diet changes and weight loss.

Type 2 diabetes is an on-going problem and it means that you cannot be completely cured. During a reversal, when you are not taking any medicine and your blood sugar level is normal, there is always a chance that symptoms can return.

A piece of good news is that people can go for years easily without any trouble of controlling glucose and any diabetes-related diseases

What to do to reverse diabetes? A simple answer is weight loss. Yes, by shedding your extra weight, you can not only manage diabetes but also live diabetes-free for years. This is mostly possible in cases if you are not insulin resistant or has diabetes only for a few years

Can a Low- Calorie Diet Help?

Some studies were done to see the effect of a low-calorie diet on diabetes. A group of people was made to follow an almost liquid diet of 600-800 calories a day for 3 to 5 months. Afterward, they were given a restricted diet so that they do not regain the lost weight.

The results showed that about 50% of people in that group were able to get their blood glucose level remained near normal.

Their diet had restricted calories, but the motivation for diabetes reversal made them stick to the controlled diet. People following this diet lost about 15 kg or more. A weight loss plan should be started as you are diagnosed with diabetes.

What can happen after Weight Loss?

Type 2 diabetes happens when cells responsible to control blood sugar do not work right. Earlier it was said that these cells stopped working entirely, but the research showed that some cells may start working again.

After weight loss, tests showed lower levels of fat in the liver and for some, the beta cells that produced insulin to control blood sugar also started working again. The chances of getting those cells to work are best when weight loss is started early as possible. It is recommended to start a weight loss plan after diabetes is diagnosed rather than making lifestyle changes or starting some medication to manage the symptoms.

Physical Activity

Exercise and physical activity also help to control and manage diabetes. It may be tough to reverse diabetes only with exercise alone. So it is best to combine exercise with a healthy diet plan. A simple low-calorie diet and some calorie-burning exercise can help you to reverse diabetes.

During a study, people on insulin and medication were put on a diet deficit of 500-700 calories per day along with 10,000 steps per day and at least 2-1/2 hours of moderate exercise per week. The result showed that more than half of the people in the group saw normal blood sugar levels without any medication.

Conclusion: Exercise does help in diabetes, but it is mostly the weight loss that can help you to reverse type 2 diabetes.

Other Methods to Cure Type 2 diabetes

Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is another way to lose weight. This surgery changes the stomach and digestive system and limits on how much to eat. Not only you can lose weight, but it can also help to reverse diabetes. Though there is not much research on why this surgery can help reverse type 2 diabetes, one theory says it affects the hormones that control blood glucose.

Research shows that more than 75% of people who had undergone bariatric surgery had their diabetes reversed.

Bariatric surgery should be considered only when the Body Mass Index or BMI is more than 35. If you have had diabetes for 5 years or less and do not use insulin, bariatric surgery can be really helpful.

There are also some risks involved with this surgery as common surgical procedures. Some nutritional deficiencies like anaemia or need to take nutritional supplements are seen as long term risk. Post-surgery regular and followup monitoring is also required.

But Bariatric surgery is seen as a good way to reverse type 2 diabetes.

Fasting

A straightforward and practical way of losing weight is fasting. But it is not considered to be a normal or conventional method to treat type 2 diabetes.

In a study, a small group of people was put on therapeutic fasting for several months. They were made to go without food and drink with calories for some time. On the fast days, they would eat only dinner, lunch and dinner on days they did not fast. It was seen that all of the people were able to stop all their diabetes medication and within 1 to 3 weeks, all of them we able to stop taking insulin. Due to fasting, they were able to lose 10 to 15% of their body weight.

Another study concluded that taking 500-600 calories twice a week and normal diet on rest 5 days helped people with type 2 diabetes to lose weight and control blood sugar levels. The same effect was seen if restricting calories to 1200-1500 every day.

These do not cure type 2 diabetes

As already confirmed that diabetes, cannot be cured, it can only be reversed. But even for this reversal, there is no magic pill. if you come across some product that claims to cure diabetes, you need to be beware. Some illegally marketed and unproven products could be dangerous. Do not rely on following if they claim to cure type 2 diabetes

  • Alternative medicines
  • Dietary supplements
  • Over-the-counter drugs

Some products that were touted to be “all-natural” had some drugs which were not listed in ingredients. Taking such medicines can alter the results of medications and you may either be taking too much of some drugs without even realizing it.

Bottom Line

Though type 2 diabetes cannot be reversed, weight loss is an effective way to reverse it. Weight loss can be achieved through various ways like diet control, fasting, and surgery, but the best way to reverse type 2 diabetes is to have a calorie deficit diet with some moderate exercise.
